From 1995-1997 Lomberg worked on the Warner Brothers film CONTACT, as Astronomical Visual Consultant. In this capacity Lomberg designed and storyboarded many of the film's astronomical animation sequences, including the three minute zoom out from Earth that opens the movie.
His "Portrait of the Milky Way" is the most accurate view of our galaxy ever painted. The 18-foot-wide original was on display for ten years at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum and is now part of their permanent collection of aviation and space art.
Oberwerk Design has transformed the original painting to an exciting new medium- 1/2"-thick Starphire® glass. PPG Starphire® glass is ultra-clear, and appears blueish-white when viewed from the edge (standard glass is green on edge). A 60-watt CO2 laser is used to accurately etch the digitized image into the glass at 200dpi, a process that takes up to 2 hours. The glass is edge-lit with brilliant white LED's (0.5" spacing), making the galaxy image appear to be floating in space. Limited-edition stock sizes are 18"x12", 24"x18", and 36"x24". Each glass has an engraved series number. Custom sizes up to 51"x36" (as shown at left) will also be available. We will begin accepting orders in July.
