Comments:  I teach with a no nonsense approach to vocal production. I will teach you how to find your optimal singing voice using common sense and science. Since feelings can be misleading, I will tell you how the muscles and resonators work together to create stunning sounds. Are you worried I am going to turn you into an opera singer? Fear not. I want to help you learn the music you like to sing and then we can work together to find your style healthfully.

Comments:  Great singing feels wonderful. It makes everyone listening feel wonderful. Great singing feels relatively effortless, because while it requires tremendous energy it brings a release that stimulates us rather than tires us out. Conversely, it’s obvious when a singer is struggling. Everyone in the room begins to tighten up in response.

My methods are based on the principle that effective teaching leads to singing that feels wonderful.

Vocal technique is a relatively simple matter of coordination. I use a series of progressive exercises to isolate and train each element of vocal production and then gradually integrate them so that they function in balanced relationships to each other.

However, coordination by itself isn’t enough. We need to connect to the desire to express something. We need to detect and release any resistance that comes up along the way.

Expression is the fuel of singing, and communicative intent is what sets the voice in motion. A compelling performance demands total commitment to the text and dramatic content of a piece, and I encourage a quality of expressive commitment for most vocal exercises.

For singing to be pleasurable, there needs to be a continuous sense of release with little or no resistance – tightness or stiffness in the jaw, tongue, throat or elsewhere that restricts the flow of breath and sound. A strained sound or sensation is the result of using the breath to try to force past resistance. We need to identify how we’re creating resistance and learn to let it go rather than fight with it.

Working on the voice takes guts. We’re training the means to communicate intense, uncensored passions in public, something most of us are not called upon to do with any frequency. I understand that in repeated surveys, people identify public speaking as their No. 1 fear! Realizing the full power of your voice can be downright terrifying at times. The resistance that obstructs a free sound often has its roots in the fear of accessing and communicating our deepest feelings and ideas. This is why learning to sing can lead to intense approach/avoidance issues for so many of us. We want to do this well, intensely, and alternately we want to avoid doing it at all costs. If you want to sing freely, you need to not just be ready for this aspect of the process. You have to embrace it.

I work with people who sing for a wide variety of reasons: professional & aspiring professional performers of opera, musical theatre, jazz, and popular styles, singers who lead musical activities in churches and temples, high-school students, and adult amateurs. In my experience, anyone who is willing to make this kind of commitment can learn to sing skillfully and beautifully – and with pleasure.

Comments:  I have 12 years of experience teaching voice to children and adults. My studios are located in Dobbs Ferry, and Briarcliff Manor, NY, just north of New York City. I am also on the faculty of The Master's School, Dobbs Ferry, and have taught voice, musical theater workshops, and diction at Greenwich House Music School, Oberlin, Yale, and CUNY Graduate Center. My teaching is based on good breathing technique, which enables the voice to remain free of tension and develop in a healthy manner. My approach is informed by the Italian School of singing and the latest scientific information, and my students perform in classical venues, musical theater productions, and as popular recording artists. My students have a strong say in what type of music and which pieces they would like to work on, and I guide them with appropriate technique and style. Private lessons are enhanced by courses in vocal physiology, basic keyboard skills, diction, repertoire, and performance. I emphasize enjoyment at all levels of singing--from the novice to the professional!
