Comparison of OBERWERK Broadband Multi-coating to Other Brands
Other brands and/or dealers sometimes claim their products are fully multi-coated. To demonstrate the difference between Oberwerk's exclusive broadband multi-coating and other brands, we ordered a brand "B" 20x80 binocular in November of 2003. Brand "B" products are marketed as "fully multi-coated". At the time, the Brand "B" binocular was back-ordered from the importer, so we knew we would eventually be receiving the very latest version of their product. The binocular arrived in December 2003. Note that the bright white reflections shown in the photos are significant amounts of light that never make it through the binocular- it's reflected back toward the direction it came from. Keep this in mind when choosing a binocular for astronomy. When viewing those barely-visible deep-sky objects, you want to make sure that as much light as possible that is captured by the objectives is actually reaching your retinas. Poor-quality, or non-existant coatings can also decrease contrast, and cause ghosting and internal reflections, when viewing brighter objects such as the planets and the moon. When comparing binoculars, beware of unsubstantiated claims, and don't accept marketing hype as fact.
