Oberwerk 25/40x100mm Binoculars

General Usage

Location
  • It is preferable to use the binoculars outdoors. Although it is possible to obtain very good performance through a window, you may notice some ghosting or an inability to obtain the sharpest focus- especially through double or triple pane glass. This is not the fault of the binoculars, but rather due to the relatively poor optical qualities of window glass. If quality of the view is less than expected, try the binoculars outdoors to see the difference.

    Mounting

  • The 25/40x100's are very heavy- 26.5 pounds in fact! Use caution when carrying them, and make sure the tripod is properly set up before mounting the binoculars on the tripod.
  • The lower left knob on the mount shaft is used to lock the binocular to the tripod.
  • The upper right knob on the mount shaft is used to tighten or lock the altitude bearing.

    Viewing

  • Choose a magnification. The smaller eyepieces are 40x, the larger ones are 25x. Turn the turrets 180° to change to the other eyepiece (it will click into position). It's usually best to start with the 25x eyepieces.
  • Adjust the IPD (Inter-Pupillary Distance). This matches the distance between the eyepieces to your eyes. While looking through the eyepieces, grab the big round prism covers (cans) and twist them to move them in or out. They are internally geared, and move together. Move them until both eyes are seeing whole and well-merged images.

    Focusing

  • Each of the eyepieces has its own helical focuser. To focus on an object, gently close one eye and turn the opposite eyepiece until the image is in sharp focus. Close the other eye and repeat for the other eyepiece. You may wish to do this for both the 25x and 40x eyepieces. Once in focus for a particular distance, they will stay in focus even while switching back and forth from 25x and 40x.
  • Do your eyepieces "click" when focusing? If so, the eyecup is a little loose. Hold the focuser and finger-tighten the eyecup (clockwise).
